History of Physical Astronomy, from the Earliest Ages to the Middle of the Nineteenth Century. Comprehending a Detailed Account of the Establishment of the Theory of Gravitation by Newton, and its Development by his Successors; with an Exposition of the Progress of Research on all the other Subjects of Celestial Physics.

Robert Grant, Scottish astronomer, studied at King's College. The present work first appeared in parts in the Society of Useful Knowledge in 1848-9. In 1852 it was reissued in its complete form (this work). Grant became director of the University of Glasgow Observatory. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1856, and in 1865 elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
